Roman Republic AR Victoriatus(3.09g, 17mm, 10h), Anonymous("Pentagram" series). 209-208 B.C., Spanish mint. Laureate head of Jupiter right. Border of dots / Victory standing right, crowning trophy with wreath; Pentagram between. ROMA in exergue. Line border. Crawford 105/1; Sydenham 233a.
Very rare and in far better than average condition for the type.
The Pentagram and related RRC 106 "Staff" series are both generally attributed to an Etrurian mint however after speaking with Pierluigi Debernardi I am of the opinion that both of these series should probably be placed in Spain as most of the examples with a recorded provenance can be traced to Spanish dealers, auction houses or collection. When viewed through this lens, these coins are very likely related to the younger Scipio's campaigns in Spain during the Second Punic War.
