Roman Republic AR denarius(17mm, 3.66g). Publius Cornelius Sulla, moneyer, 151 BC. Head of Roma right in winged helmet; X (mark of value) behind/Victory in galloping biga right, holding whip and reins; P SVLA below horses; ROMA on tablet in exergue. Crawford 205/1; Cornelia 1

Purchased from Kirk Davis at NYINC 2018, 1/12/2018, reportedly ex CNG Triton I group lot(not pictured), ex Boston Museum of Fine Arts collection, accession no. 32.756, donated 1932 by Dr. Malcolm Storer

P SVLA is traditionally interpreted as Publius Cornelius Sulla, minted circa 151 BC. Some believe this moneyer to have been the grandfather of the dictator Sulla but Crawford argues that it is more likely that this moneyer is instead an uncle of Sulla's, likely an older brother of the father of the dictator.

This coin was reportedly part of one of the CNG Triton I group lots of duplicates from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts collection and came with the MFA's old tray tag. After doing some digging I found that this coin's accession number 32.756, corresponded to a 1932 accession date and in particular, a large group of coins donated by Dr. Malcolm Storer, an important member of the Boston Numismatic Society, Massachusetts Historical Society and Boston Museumof Fine Arts. At one point, he held the position of Keeper of the Coins for both the Boston MFA and the Massachusetts Historical Society and donated many coins and medals to the MFA.
