Roman Republic AR Victoriatus(16 mm, 2.98g, 6h). Anonymous, circa 211-208 B.C., Sicilian mint. Laureate head of Jupiter right. Border of dots / Victory right crowning trophy; in exergue, ROMA. Line border. Crawford 67/1; BMCRR Italy 137; RRSC V10
This anonymous victoriatus is probably from a different mint than the Cr. 70/1 victoriati, though both mints were very likely on the island of Sicily. Whereas the Cr. 70/1 victoriati are of very fine style and highly detailed, the 67/1 victoriati are generally less well detailed and more clumsily executed. The trophy with skirt and greaves is the key factor in differentiating these from all the other series as it does not appear on any other fully-anonymous victoriati.
