Roman Republic Æ Uncia(6.10g, 20.5mm). Corn-ear(grain-ear) series. 214-212 B.C. Sicilian mint. Helmeted head of Mars right; behind, • / Prow of galley right; ROMA and grain ear above; below, • but unusually elongated. Crawford 42/4 var; Sydenham -

This coin with its unusually massive reverse mark of value is a strange variety of Cr 42/4 or possibly McCabe group B, the unsigned sibling of the corn-ear series(but the prow style suggests there is likely a corn-ear above the prow). I am aware of a very worn die match in another private collection which proves this strange ovular mark on the reverse is from the die and not a product of something like tooling but I am otherwise unaware of anything quite like this. An enigma.
